Question 9: Doesn’t the Trinity Contradict Itself?

The Question

Question 9: Christians say that: “The Father (F) is God, the Son (S) is God, and the Holy Ghost (H) is God, but the Father is not the Son, the Son is not the Holy Ghost, and the Holy Ghost is not the Father”. In simple arithmetic terms, therefore, if F = G, S = G, and H = G, then it follows that F = S = H, while the second part of the statement suggests that F ≠ S ≠ H (meaning, “not equal”). Isn’t that a contradiction to the Christian dogma of the Trinity in itself?

The Short Answer

Your main question here is: Doesn’t the Trinity contradict itself? And the short answer is a resounding YES. The Trinity doctrine does contradict itself.

A Doctrine Founded by Men

The Trinity is a doctrine founded by men. It is taught using Scripture, but it solves no problem. It instead creates several problems and confusion that its founders eventually conclude as a “mystery”. But God is not the author of confusion.

For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints. – 1 Corinthians 14:33

The God of the Bible can be known, but the Trinity remains a mystery that can’t be explained. Furthermore, the God of the Bible gave us minds and wants us to use them in knowing and loving Him, but the Trinity discourages the use of the mind and logic.

The God of the Bible is NOT a Trinity

The God of the Bible is not a trinity. Scripture reveals that the God of the Bible is an individual who is also the Father of all. And that includes Jesus Christ.

Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one! – Deuteronomy 6:4

I am the LORD, and there is no other; There is no God besides Me. I will gird you, though you have not known Me, that they may know from the rising of the sun to the west that there is none besides Me. I am the LORD, and there is no other. – Isaiah 45:5-6

Therefore concerning the eating of things offered to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is no other God but one. – 1 Corinthians 8:4

But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. – 1 Corinthians 11:3

But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming. Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power. For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet. The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death. For “He has put all things under His feet.” But when He says “all things are put under Him,” it is evident that He who put all things under Him is excepted. Now when all things are made subject to Him, then the Son Himself will also be subject to Him who put all things under Him, that God may be all in all. – 1 Corinthians 15:20-28

One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. – Ephesians 4:6

Jesus’s Own Words Concerning the Father

Jesus Himself plainly confirmed that He is not the Almighty God, but the Son who was sent by and is subject to the Father.

Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. – John 5:19

You have heard Me say to you, ‘I am going away and coming back to you.’ If you loved Me, you would rejoice because I said, ‘I am going to the Father,’ for My Father is greater than I. – John 14:28

Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You, as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him. And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. – John 17:1-3

Jesus said to her, “Do not hold Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.'” – John 20:17

Conclusion

When you examine the math and logic, the Trinity doctrine inherently contradicts itself. Instead of forcing yourself to accept human contradictions as “mystery,” simply return to the plain testimony of Scripture: the Father is the only true God, and Jesus is His sent Son.

Next, I’ll be answering the question: If Jesus is God, why did He refuse to be called good?
